What is froment maneuver?

The Froment maneuver is a physical exam technique used to assess the strength of the adductor pollicis muscle and the function of the ulnar nerve. The maneuver involves asking the patient to hold a piece of paper between their thumb and index finger, while the examiner attempts to pull the paper away. If the patient compensates for weak adductor pollicis muscle by flexing the thumb interphalangeal joint, which is controlled by the median nerve, this suggests ulnar nerve dysfunction. The maneuver is often used to diagnose ulnar nerve entrapment or injury, such as in cubital tunnel syndrome.
